Whale Migration – Whale Watching Tours
The Grey Whales, once nearly extinct, are found in abundance in the Pacific Coastal waters. They were removed from the Endangered Species List in 1994.
Every December, the Grey Whales migrate down the west coast of the Pacific Ocean to mate or give birth in the warmer ocean waters of Baja California. It takes 5-8 weeks for the whales to reach San Ignacio Lagoon, Ojo de Liebre Lagoon and Magdalena Bay, Baja California Mexico. In these secluded, shallow waters, the female whales give birth. The baby whales are born tail first and must be taken to the surface for their first breath by their mother. A female whale will care for her calf for 6-8 months. A female whale will reach maturity at around 8 years old and will deliver a single calf every other year.
The male whales average 35-50 feet and weigh 28-38 tons. The female whales range 42-50 feet in length and weigh 34-38 tons. A baby whale is 15 feet and weighs about .9 of a ton. The grey whales are bottom feeding whales and thrive in the shallow coastal waters which make Baja California the perfect feeding grounds.
From February to April, the whales start their trip back to the colder Pacific waters up to Alaska. Male and Female whales with no offspring leave first, followed by female whales and their calves.
Travelers from all over the world journey to Baja California to participate in an incredible adventure experience of a lifetime – whale watching.
Experience the excitement of watching the whales in their natural habitat and participating in interactive whale watching programs.
